Amazon Prime Video Greenlights 'Rise of the Empress' Fantasy Series

The adaptation of Julie C. Dao's novels will feature a dark East Asian-inspired fantasy world and a subversive female protagonist.

Julie C. Dao’s 'Rise of the Empress' book series is being adapted into an eight-episode series for Amazon Prime Video.
The show is set in a mystical ancient Asian empire and follows a peasant girl, Xifeng, navigating power and romance amidst political chaos.
Crystal Liu and James Wong, known for their work on 'American Horror Story,' will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers.
The series is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with JuVee Productions, Significant Productions, and Gemma Chan, with Dao as a co-executive producer.
Filming is planned to take place in Malaysia, and the series will be available to stream in over 240 countries and territories worldwide.
