Amazon has agreed to stop selling products containing ejiao, a gelatin made from donkey hide, in California following a legal complaint from the Center for Contemporary Equine Studies.
The Center argued that the sale of ejiao violated California's Prohibition of Horse Slaughter and Sale of Horsemeat for Human Consumption Act, as donkeys are part of the equine family.
Ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicine, has been linked to nearly 5 million donkey deaths and contributes to their declining global population.
Amazon's settlement includes a commitment to 'undertake reasonable best efforts' to prevent the sale of products containing ejiao to California addresses.
Despite the settlement, Amazon continues to sell ejiao products in the other 49 states.
