Amazon Fires Engineer Ahmed Shahrour After Probe Cites Policy Violations

Amazon cites an internal review that found policy violations related to Slack messages on the IsraelPalestine conflict.

Overview

  • Ahmed Shahrour, a Palestinian software engineer with Amazon’s Whole Foods unit in Seattle, was terminated on Oct. 13 following roughly five weeks on suspension.
  • Amazon says he violated standards of conduct, written communication rules and acceptable use policy by posting numerous non-work messages about the conflict to corporate Slack.
  • An email described by Bloomberg said his statements were deemed intended to threaten, intimidate, coerce or interfere with senior leaders and colleagues.
  • Shahrour and an employee group call the firing retaliation for his protests against Project Nimbus, a reported $1.2 billion cloud deal serving Israeli government and military entities, which he opposed in on-site demonstrations and flyers.
  • Amazon’s spokesperson said the company investigates reports of discrimination, harassment or threatening behavior and takes appropriate action, as tech firms continue disciplining workers over protests tied to Israel-related contracts.
