Overview

  • The expansion brings thousands of fresh items—produce, dairy, meat, seafood and baked goods—to Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery network in more than 1,000 cities, with a target of 2,300 locations by the end of 2025.
  • Prime members receive free same-day delivery on grocery orders over $25 or pay a $2.99 fee for smaller orders, while non-Prime customers pay a $12.99 flat fee per order.
  • Grocery and non-grocery items flow through a single cart and checkout and are handled via a specialized temperature-controlled network featuring six-point quality checks and recyclable insulated bags.
  • Pilots in Phoenix, Orlando and Kansas City drew many first-time grocery shoppers who now order perishables twice as often, helping Amazon exceed $100 billion in gross grocery and household essentials sales last year.
  • Rival stocks reacted sharply after the announcement—Instacart fell over 10% and shares of Walmart and Kroger declined—as Amazon leverages its recent $4 billion investment to extend same- and next-day reach into rural markets.
