Amazon Deter Alerts Fall 36.9% to Lowest Level Since 2016

Overview

• The Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe) reported on Friday that Deter alerts for the Amazon fell 36.9% to 2,874.38 km² for the August 2025–July 2026 cycle, the lowest value in the Deter series.
• Deter also showed a 7.8% drop in Cerrado alerts to 5,119.46 km², leaving the Cerrado with a larger absolute area under alert than the Amazon in this cycle.
• State patterns varied: Pará, Mato Grosso and Amazonas recorded large volumes but declines, while Roraima bucked the trend with a 32.5% increase in alerts.
• Deter produces near‑real‑time alerts used to guide enforcement and does not equal the official annual Prodes tally, which uses different methods and will publish the Amazon figure in November 2026.
• Authorities and environmental groups attribute part of the decline to intensified enforcement tools such as remote embargos, coordinated Ibama operations and municipal partnerships, a change that could influence trade and policy scrutiny tied to Brazil’s deforestation record.
