Amazon Debuts Linux-Based Vega OS and Budget 4K Fire TV Stick, Refreshes Smart-TV Lineup

Amazon is moving Fire TV off Android to its own Vega platform to speed up apps and streamline development as third-party services complete their migration.

Overview

  • Fire TV Stick 4K Select is available to pre-order for €54.99 and is slated to ship from mid-October.
  • Vega OS replaces Android-based Fire OS with a Linux core and a React Native framework to simplify cross-platform app development.
  • Amazon says core streaming apps are supported now, with Xbox Cloud Gaming and Luna marked as “coming soon.”
  • New Fire TV Omni QLED, Fire TV 4, and Fire TV 2 series bring brighter displays, more local dimming, faster chips, and Omnisense sensing, starting at €699.99, €499.99, and €279.99.
  • Amazon has already deployed Vega in firmware for Echo Show 5, Echo Hub, and Echo Spot, and the Fire TV interface remains familiar to users.
