Overview
- A Boeing 767-300 freighter operated by 21 Air for Amazon landed from San Juan on Sunday, overran Runway 30 at Miami International, crossed the perimeter fence, hit a van and other vehicles, and burst into flames, killing five cleaning-company employees.
- The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the probe and has recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder as investigators document the wreckage and collect radar and air-traffic data.
- The NTSB says the airplane traveled about 396 meters past the end of the paved runway before stopping on a road beyond the airport.
- Video reviewed by experts shows a late or soft touchdown and suggests a strong tailwind pushed the jet farther down the runway, and officials said it is not yet clear why the crew did not execute a go-around.
- Two pilots were hospitalized and have since been released while three other people remain in hospital, two in serious condition; the crash has forced partial runway closures, hundreds of flight delays and cancellations, and a separate local probe into the roadway deaths.
