Aluar Opens Etapa V to Create Argentina’s Largest Wind Complex

The expansion reduces the Puerto Madryn smelter’s reliance on gas by tripling its wind share to roughly one third.

Overview

  • Aluar inaugurated Etapa V Thursday, adding 56 Goldwind 6 MW turbines and 336 MW to bring the park to 582 MW, the biggest installed wind capacity in Argentina.
  • The Etapa V phase cost about US$400 million and raises Aluar’s cumulative wind investment to roughly US$740–745 million.
  • Company projections say the new phase will boost wind supply to about 33% of the Puerto Madryn plant’s electricity use, cut the plant’s thermal gas share and produce roughly 1,500 GWh per year while claiming over 1 million tonnes of CO2 avoided annually.
  • A September change to Aluar’s bylaws formally allows the firm to sell electricity to third parties and to pursue technology projects such as data centers while it advances solar and battery pilots in Buenos Aires, San Fernando and Corrientes.
  • Aluar owns large adjacent land with capacity for up to about 1,500 MW more of wind but wider commercialization depends on transmission capacity and possible moves on the Futaleufú hydro concession that also supplies the smelter.
