Altroconsumo Survey: Up to €3,700 Grocery Savings in Italy as Eurospin Leads Price Rankings

A nationwide survey of 1,150 stores by Altroconsumo highlights regional gaps under continued price increases since 2021.

Overview

  • Altroconsumo mapped 1.6 million prices across 125 categories in 67 cities during March 2025 to compare supermarkets, hypermarkets and discount chains.
  • Eurospin ranks as the overall cheapest chain for shoppers choosing the lowest-priced items, while Carrefour offers the biggest cuts on store-brand baskets and Famila tops mixed and branded baskets in traditional supermarkets.
  • A family of four can save up to €3,700 a year by optimizing choices, with estimated maxima of about €3,273 for couples and €2,249 for single shoppers.
  • Prices rose 2.2% year over year and about 26% versus 2021, underscoring persistent pressure on household food budgets.
  • City-level gaps are pronounced, with stronger competition and lower minima in northern areas such as Venice and Verona, limited savings in parts of the South, and Sassari identified as the least economical location.
