Maddox helped perpetrate a kidnapping and rape hoax that inflamed racial hostilities in New York in the 1980s.
A grand jury found no credible evidence the alleged attack happened, and Maddox was held liable for defamation in a lawsuit.
Maddox was suspended from practicing law and never attempted reinstatement.
Maddox believed radicalism was necessary to combat racism.
