Altai Republic Proposes Sweeping Alcohol Sales Limits, Weekend Ban

Officials cite a mortality rate above the birthrate, attributing many deaths to alcohol.

Overview

  • Weekday retail hours would run 11:00–19:00, with Friday sales ending at 16:00, and sales would stop entirely on weekends and public holidays.
  • The plan would shut alcomarkets, bar retail alcohol sales in apartment buildings and near kindergartens and schools, and close informal “nalivayki” in residential areas.
  • A full prohibition on vaping products, smoking mixtures and their components is proposed, with implementation contingent on State Duma consideration.
  • Governor Andrey Turchak ordered the Economic Development Ministry to draft a decree within a week, and the package will go to the next regional government meeting.
  • Authorities also announced coordinated enforcement raids involving the Interior Ministry, Rospotrebnadzor, regional deputies and the public.
