Alstom to Supply 39 Driverless Trains and CBTC for Mumbai Metro Line 4 Under L&T Contract

Local manufacturing across four Indian sites underpins the Green Line’s rollout.

Overview

  • Larsen & Toubro has commissioned Alstom to deliver 234 Metropolis cars across 39 six-car driverless trainsets and a radio CBTC signalling system, with five years of maintenance.
  • MMRDA awarded L&T the Integrated Systems Package for Line 4 covering rolling stock, signalling and train control, telecommunications, platform screen doors, depot works and five-year upkeep.
  • Design will be done in Bengaluru with manufacturing at Sri City, propulsion produced in Coimbatore and bogies built in Savli under the Make in India plan.
  • Mumbai Metro Line 4 spans 35.3 km from Wadala to Kasarvadavali with 32 elevated stations and planned connections to the Eastern Express Highway, the Monorail and other metro lines.
  • MMRDA has placed rakes on track and a trial run is expected in September on a 10 km stretch of Lines 4/4A covering 10 elevated stations, while media report the deal value as a few hundred million euros without official confirmation.
