Overview

  • As of June 2025, 402,500 PIP claimants—around 11%—are receiving too little support after failing to report changes such as hospital stays or a worsening condition.
  • Personal Independence Payment awards are based on assessments of daily living and mobility difficulties across lower and higher rate components.
  • Claimants must notify the DWP of changes in health prognosis, care settings, imprisonment or foreign travel exceeding four weeks.
  • Certain events—including starting a job, stopping other benefits or changing roles at work—do not need to be reported unless they affect the assistance required.
  • Failure to provide accurate information or report required changes can result in financial penalties or court action against claimants.
