Almaraz Extension Bid Sent to Nuclear Watchdog as Extremadura Campaign Centers on Plant’s Future

A CSN safety review now decides whether a bid to operate to 2030 can proceed.

Overview

  • The owners of Almaraz have formally requested running the plant to 2030, the government has referred the petition to the CSN, and the 2027 and 2028 shutdown dates remain in force.
  • The Ministry for the Ecological Transition is publicly deferring to the CSN and has not declared support for extending operations.
  • The December 21 regional election features a clear split on policy, with PP, PSOE and Vox backing continued operation and Unidas por Extremadura advocating closure.
  • Extremadura’s PP proposes cutting the regional ecotax on the plant by up to 50% from 2027, a move estimated to forgo more than €45 million a year, drawing PSOE criticism and occurring alongside local backlash against socialist deputies.
  • Almaraz underpins roughly €400 million a year in regional activity and stronger local employment and demographics, while the state firm Enresa is staffing up to implement Spain’s current nuclear phaseout plan.
