Allgäu Ski Season Starts Early With Söllereck Opening Sunday, Zugspitze Planned Nov. 28

Early snow plus sustained cold create conditions for an accelerated start across the German Alps.

Overview

  • First turns arrive this weekend, with the Schwärzenlifte opening on Saturday and Söllereck in Oberstdorf following on Sunday, according to the VDS.
  • Operators set a phased rollout for OberstdorfKleinwalsertal: Fellhorn and Kanzelwand on Dec. 5, Ifen on Dec. 12, Nebelhorn on Dec. 13, and Walmendingerhorn/Heuberg on Dec. 19.
  • The Zugspitze aims to open on Nov. 28, with the regilded summit cross slated to return by helicopter if weather permits.
  • Lift tickets cost more this season, including €69 for a Zugspitze day pass (€3 higher than last year), while Austrian resorts report increases around four to five percent.
  • Around €55 million in regional upgrades are rolling out, and sustainability steps include three fully electric piste groomers at OberstdorfKleinwalsertal plus wider use of green power and biofuels; glacier retreat continues to constrain some Zugspitze lift operations.
