Alleged Affair Between Georgia DA and Trump Case Prosecutor Raises Questions

Fulton County DA Fani Willis faces scrutiny over alleged relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade; legal experts suggest case against Trump unlikely to be dismissed.

  • Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who is leading the election fraud case against former President Donald Trump, are facing allegations of an improper relationship. The allegations first surfaced in a court filing by a Trump co-defendant, Michael Roman, and have been bolstered by a new court filing from Joycelyn Wade, Nathan Wade's estranged wife.
  • Joycelyn Wade's court filing includes credit card statements that allegedly show Nathan Wade purchasing airline tickets for himself and Willis, suggesting they took trips together. These trips are alleged to have been funded by the more than $650,000 Nathan Wade has received from Willis's office for his work on the Trump case.
  • The allegations have led to speculation about whether the alleged relationship could impact the Trump case. However, legal experts suggest that while the allegations may be damaging politically and professionally for Willis, they are unlikely to warrant dismissal of the charges against Trump.
  • Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis has requested that Willis disclose information relating to her potential 'misuse' of county funds in her decision to appoint Nathan Wade as outside counsel in the Trump case. Ellis has asked for invoices, contracts, payments, professional experience of each special prosecutor, and the source of funding for any payments to special prosecutors from Jan. 1, 2021 until now.
  • Willis has defended her hiring of Wade and has not directly denied a romantic relationship. She has until Feb. 2 to respond to the allegations, and a hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 15.
