All Three Hikers Found Dead on Mt. Baldy Identified After Devil’s Backbone Falls

Trail access will remain restricted through Jan. 7 during the investigation into the winter-storm fatalities.

Overview

  • Authorities named the two newly identified victims as Juan Sarat Lopez, 37, and Bayron Pedro Ramos Garcia, 36, both Guatemalan nationals residing in Los Angeles.
  • The third victim was previously identified as 19-year-old Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova of Seal Beach.
  • Investigators believe the men fell from the Devil’s Backbone and died the same day their bodies were located.
  • Officials said Casanova was not hiking with Lopez and Garcia when the incident occurred.
  • Rescue teams were grounded by high winds until an air medic confirmed the deaths, recoveries were completed Tuesday, and seven Mount Baldy trails are closed through Jan. 7.
