All Stranded Everest Hikers Evacuated on Tibetan Side After Blizzard

Authorities are closing affected Tibetan valleys to coordinate orderly returns.

  • State media said 580 hikers and more than 300 local guides, porters and yak herders reached safety in or near Qudeng in Dingri County.
  • Rescue teams escorted groups out of Karma Valley after heavy snow crushed tents and buried trails at roughly 4,900 meters.
  • Supplies including food, medicine, oxygen and warming materials were delivered as villagers used oxen and horses to open access.
  • Officials have temporarily shut the Karma and Rongshar valleys as well as Cho Oyu scenic areas on the Tibetan side.
  • The weather hit during China’s Golden Week holiday, and emergency services reported at least one death in Qinghai from hypothermia and altitude sickness.
