All Nippon Airways Deploys AI-Based Turbulence Forecasting System Fleetwide

Validated by 2,500 pilots after years of development, the system delivers 86 percent accuracy to improve turbulence forecasting across ANA’s fleet.

Overview

  • ANA is the first global carrier to fully integrate BlueWX’s AI turbulence prediction into its operational weather data systems as of early August 2025.
  • The deep-learning model analyzes a decade of historical turbulence records to generate precise forecasts for flight crews and dispatchers.
  • By providing real-time turbulence outlooks, the tool aims to reduce injuries, flight delays and cargo damage tied to the 30–50 percent of incidents attributed to turbulence.
  • The technology emerged from a collaboration with Keio University launched in 2019 and was commercialized through the July 2023 founding of BlueWX.
  • BlueWX plans to offer the forecasting service to other airlines and is developing additional AI models for wind prediction and carbon-neutral route optimization.
