All Four Rescued Tiger Cubs Die at Mysuru Facility as Viral Disease Suspected

Officials point to starvation, capture stress plus a suspected feline panleukopenia infection as lab tests proceed.

Overview

  • The tigress was trapped near Hunsur on November 27 and her four cubs were captured on November 30, then housed at the Chamundi rehabilitation centre outside Mysuru.
  • Despite veterinary care, the cubs died on December 1, 5, 7 and 9, with officials noting the young animals had gone nearly 48 hours without food and were exhausted by the capture operation.
  • Preliminary necropsy findings cite cardiopulmonary failure with severe gastritis for the first death, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and encephalitis for the second, and suspected feline panleukopenia for the latter two.
  • Viscera and tissue samples have been sent to a Bengaluru veterinary laboratory for confirmation, and final reports are awaited.
  • The mother tigress remains alive under observation at the facility, and officials have not decided on her release to the wild.
