Overview

  • The flares, designed to produce red smoke and flames, were deployed on May 13 during a U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Air Force exercise off Milwaukee but did not activate.
  • On Memorial Day, a lifeguard found one silver, 15-to-18-inch device at Chicago’s Montrose Beach and the local bomb squad removed it safely.
  • Three additional flares remained unaccounted for in Lake Michigan and prompted the Coast Guard to issue warnings urging boaters and beachgoers not to handle similar objects.
  • Officials confirmed all four missing flares have since been located, though they did not reveal where the other three were recovered.
  • The phosphorus-based pyrotechnics can burn at temperatures approaching 2,900°F and the public is instructed to report any sightings to 911 or the Coast Guard.
