All Climbers Evacuated From Everest’s Tibetan Side After Early-Season Blizzard

State media say nearly 900 people were moved to safety in a multi-day operation after heavy snow trapped camps around 4,900 meters.

Overview

  • Local authorities and state rescue teams concluded evacuations by Tuesday, guiding stranded groups to meeting points stocked with food, heat, medicine and oxygen.
  • Officials reported roughly 580 tourists plus more than 300 guides, yak herders and other workers were affected, with about 350 descending by midday Monday and the remainder on Tuesday.
  • Several people were treated for hypothermia, and about a dozen were escorted to a relief hub with oxygen supplies, according to Xinhua.
  • The Everest tourist area on the Tibetan side has been temporarily closed following the rescue, which unfolded during China’s Golden Week holiday.
  • Early-season snow also disrupted parts of Qinghai and Xinjiang in western China, and a South Korean climber died in a separate storm on Nepal’s Mera Peak.
