Aligarh Police Arrest Four in Temple Graffiti Case, Call It a Plot to Frame Rivals

Investigators say the slogans were staged to implicate rivals in local land disputes.

Overview

  • Four local men — Jishant Kumar, Aakash Saraswat, Dilip Kumar and Abhishek Saraswat — were arrested after graffiti reading “I love Muhammad” appeared on four temples on October 25.
  • Police said a fifth suspect, Rahul, is absconding and a search is underway.
  • Consistent spelling mistakes in the slogans, along with CCTV footage and call detail records, led investigators to the suspects, and the spray can used was recovered.
  • An earlier case that named eight Muslim men after the graffiti was found will be withdrawn, authorities said.
  • The accused have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act for offences including provocation, offending at a religious place, false evidence and criminal conspiracy.
