Algeria Join Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt as Africa’s Early 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

The race now shifts to the final matchdays through Oct. 14 followed by November playoffs for the best runners-up.

Overview

  • Algeria sealed Group G with a 3-0 win over Somalia in Oran as Mohamed Amoura scored twice and captain Riyad Mahrez added another, sending the Desert Foxes to their first World Cup since 2014.
  • Egypt clinched Group A a day earlier with a 3-0 victory over Djibouti in Casablanca, led by a Mohamed Salah brace after Ibrahim Adel’s opener, ensuring top spot with one game to spare.
  • Ghana crushed the Central African Republic 5-0 in Meknes and need a point in their finale against Comoros to secure qualification from Group I.
  • Cape Verde rallied for a 3-3 draw in Tripoli and will win Group D with a home victory over Eswatini, while Cameroon must beat Angola and hope the leaders slip to avoid the playoff path.
  • CAF’s format sends nine group winners directly to the finals, with the four best runners-up into a November playoff before March 2026 intercontinental playoffs; the World Cup draw is set for Dec. 5.
