Alexis Zárate Granted Conditional Release and Eyes Return to Argentine Football

Freed on parole after serving five years, the former Independiente defender completed 92% of his law studies, worked at his father-in-law’s pasta factory and trained as he eyes a professional comeback.

  • Alexis Zárate was sentenced in September 2017 to six years and six months in prison after a court found he sexually assaulted Giuliana Peralta in his Quilmes apartment following a night out with Martín Benítez.
  • He obtained libertad condicional in August 2025 after serving five years and one month of his sentence, leaving 15 months under judicial supervision.
  • During his incarceration he studied law, passing 92% of his coursework and coming close to graduation.
  • Since his release he has been working at his father-in-law’s pasta factory and training daily with hopes of returning to professional football.
  • Zárate played for Independiente, Temperley and briefly for Liepaja FC in Latvia and represented Argentina at under-15 and under-17 levels.
