Alex Schwazer, 40, Sets European Masters Record in 10,000m Racewalk

The mark came at an open regional meet in Bolzano, ranking fourth all time among Italians at the distance.

Overview

  • Schwazer clocked 38:24 at the Campo Coni in Bolzano, a personal best that surpasses his 2011 mark and places him fourth on Italy’s all-time list for the 10,000m walk.
  • The performance is also the third-fastest by an Italian this season, trailing only Massimo Stano and Francesco Fortunato.
  • He raced in the Trentino-Alto Adige regional championships out of classification because he is registered in Veneto with Atletica San Biagio di Callalta.
  • Schwazer said the result was a major satisfaction, noting he trains five days a week while working, with coaching from former pro cyclist Domenico Pozzovivo.
  • The 2008 Olympic champion returned from an eight-year anti-doping ban last year, has since won a Veneto 10,000m and set the Italian M40 3,000m record, and now consults on performance for FC Südtirol.
