Alex Rose and Charles Pardoe Convicted of Double Murder in Sunbury E‑Bike Pursuit

Prosecutors said Rose used his pickup as a weapon after a self-styled hunt for suspected burglars, with sentencing set for 22 September.

Overview

  • A jury at Guildford Crown Court returned majority guilty verdicts against Rose and Pardoe for two counts of murder, convicted Tara Knaggs of assisting an offender, and acquitted Samuel Aspden.
  • William Birchard, 21, died at the scene and Darren George, 22, died in hospital after Rose drove the wrong way down the M3/A316 slip road and struck their e-bike at more than 60 mph.
  • Evidence presented included CCTV, phone data and doorbell audio showing coordinated searching, with Rose on the phone to Knaggs throughout the pursuit.
  • After the collision, Rose left the scene, dumped the truck and later attempted to board a one-way flight to Istanbul with Knaggs at Birmingham Airport carrying about £4,000 in cash and minimal luggage.
  • Rose made a false 999 report claiming his truck had been stolen and later admitted perverting the course of justice; sentencing will take place at Guildford Crown Court on 22 September.
