The goal also set a new NHL record for most goaltenders scored against, with 179, surpassing Jaromír Jágr's previous record of 178.
The 39-year-old winger has 21 goals in 29 games this season, maintaining a pace that could see him break the record before the end of the current season if he remains healthy.
Ovechkin holds several other NHL records, including most power-play goals (317) and most overtime game-winning goals (27).
