Overview
- On Friday, Nov. 6, Alex Cooper, her husband Matt Kaplan and their media company Unwell formally signed with Creative Artists Agency for representation.
- The agency move follows an August strategic investment from Patrick Whitesell’s WTSL that valued Unwell at $500 million and funds the company’s planned expansion into scripted and unscripted projects.
- Unwell has been broadening its content slate with projects at Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and YouTube and has added senior executives such as Joanne Bradford (president), Mina Lefevre (chief content officer) and former CAA agent Olivia Owen (head of talent).
- The company has also faced setbacks this year, including the shutdown of a drinks business and published staff complaints about Kaplan’s management style, and Cooper, Kaplan and Unwell continue to use outside legal counsel.
- Built from Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast and Kaplan’s film background, Unwell’s shift to major-agency representation could speed IP deals and studio partnerships while raising pressure to show operational fixes and protect staff as it scales.
