Aleix Espargaro Tops Sepang Shakedown as Yamaha’s New V4 Shows Promise

A 1:57.173 benchmark closes the three-day run, setting up the full Sepang test from February 3–5.

Overview

  • Honda test rider Aleix Espargaro ended fastest overall with a 1:57.173, edging KTM’s Pol Espargaro by 0.126s, with Fabio Quartararo third at 1:57.690 on Yamaha’s V4.
  • Jack Miller led Day 2 on the Yamaha V4 with a 1:57.908, the project’s first time topping a MotoGP timesheet and quicker than his 2025 Sepang qualifying lap on the inline M1.
  • Rookies made major gains as Diogo Moreira cut more than 1.5s on the final day to 1:58.338, while Toprak Razgatlioglu improved to 1:58.465 and finished a thousandth behind Dani Pedrosa.
  • The shakedown featured manufacturers’ test riders plus the two rookies, with Yamaha allowed to run its race riders under concessions, as teams validated 2026 aero and engine updates including KTM’s early ‘850cc’ prototype work.
  • Attention now shifts to the official Sepang test, where the full grid is due to run from February 3–5 except injured riders Jorge Martin and Fermin Aldeguer.
