Alec Baldwin Indicted Again in 'Rust' Shooting; SAG-AFTRA Defends Actor

Union argues it was not Baldwin's responsibility to ensure firearm safety on set, while Hutchins' family attorney criticizes this defense.

Alec Baldwin has been indicted by a New Mexico grand jury and charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2021 shooting on the set of 'Rust' that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.
SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors and media professionals, has defended Baldwin, arguing that it was not his responsibility as an actor to ensure firearms were handled and used safely on set.
The union refers to industry safety guidelines which state that an experienced, qualified armorer should be in charge of all handling, use, and safekeeping of firearms on set, and that it is not the performer’s responsibility to check any firearm.
Hutchins' family attorney, Gloria Allred, has responded to SAG-AFTRA's defense of Baldwin, stating that the notion that an actor is not responsible if they hold a gun, point it at someone on a movie set, and discharge the weapon flies in the face of common sense and the law.
If convicted of the fourth-degree felony, Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison according to New Mexico law.
