Alebrijes Parade Opens Mexico City’s Día de Muertos Season as 200+ Figures Line Reforma Through Nov. 9

A record cempasúchil harvest powers direct sales to producers across the capital.

  • Saturday’s 17th Desfile de Alebrijes drew more than 50,000 spectators and featured over 200 monumental pieces by artisans from multiple states, according to the city’s Culture Secretariat.
  • Most of the 214 alebrijes have been installed along Paseo de la Reforma near the Estela de Luz, where they will remain on public display until Nov. 9.
  • Officials expect roughly five million attendees across more than 400–500 activities citywide, with mega-ofrendas expanded beyond the Zócalo to additional borough venues.
  • The Mega Procesión de las Catrinas is set for Sunday, Oct. 26 at 18:00, running from the Ángel de la Independencia to the Zócalo, with organizers anticipating over 16,000 participants.
  • The Gran Desfile de Día de Muertos will take place Saturday, Nov. 1 at 14:00 from Chapultepec’s Puerta de los Leones to the Zócalo, as the city promotes direct cempasúchil sales after a record harvest of about 6.3 million plants.
