ALEA Identifies Victim and Trucker in Foggy U.S. 80 Chain-Reaction Crash in Lowndes County

The early-morning collision in White Hall followed a prior wreck that left vehicles stopped in the roadway, troopers say.

Overview

  • Kenneth B. Watts, 41, of Selma, was pronounced dead at the scene after his stationary 2005 Buick LaCrosse was struck from behind.
  • Troopers identified the 2023 Volvo tractor-trailer driver as Timothy A. Burgett, 24, of Hope Hull, who was injured and taken to Baptist Medical Center South.
  • After the initial impact, Watts’ Buick hit an unoccupied 2013 Ford Fiesta and then a stationary 2000 Peterbilt tractor-trailer from the earlier crash.
  • ALEA advisories noted thick fog at the site near the 107-mile marker in White Hall at about 3:37 a.m. on Oct. 21.
  • Both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 80 were closed for several hours with lengthy detours, and the investigation remains ongoing with no charges reported.
