Aldi Sets £1.6bn UK Expansion, Unveils First New Sites and Speeds Up Openings

The chain doubles down on growth despite a profit drop tied to price cuts, wage hikes and investment, warning that policy‑driven costs could push up food prices.

Overview

  • Aldi will open 80 UK stores across 2026–27 and plans 21 new branches within the next 13 weeks, including Shoreditch, Durham and Kirkintilloch.
  • The retailer named nine of the near‑term openings and, separately, highlighted a first wave of 23 target locations for future sites such as Watford, Ashford, Telford and Kentish Town.
  • Annual revenue for 2024 rose to £18.1bn with market share at about 10.8%, while operating profit fell to £435.5m as the company absorbed pricing, pay and infrastructure costs.
  • Management says it has cut prices on roughly 900 products this year after investing about £300m, and lifted store pay to at least £13.02 nationwide and £14.35 inside the M25.
  • CEO Giles Hurley cautioned that further government‑driven cost increases, including higher employer obligations, risk feeding through to higher grocery prices.
