Aldi Süd to End Lowest-Welfare Own-Brand Meat Sales by Mid-January 2026

The private-label move covers most of its range, with about 90% of products sold under Aldi Süd brands.

Overview

  • The change takes effect in mid-January 2026 across beef, pork, chicken and turkey sold under Aldi Süd’s own labels.
  • Branded products and international specialty items are excluded from the policy.
  • The company describes the step as unique in the sector and positions it as a signal for improved animal welfare.
  • Within Aldi Süd’s private labels, about half of fresh meat and more than a third of chilled meat and sausage already come from Haltungsform levels 3–5.
  • The shift arrives ahead of industry targets to move own-brand fresh meat to levels 3–4 by 2030, as 2023 data showed level‑1 largely absent in poultry and rare in pork but still dominant in beef.
