Aldi Raises Base Pay to £13.02 an Hour to Retain Top Spot in Supermarket Wage Race

The move keeps Aldi narrowly ahead in the supermarket wage race to attract staff during its UK expansion.

Overview

  • The updated minimum takes effect on 1 September and covers more than 28,000 hourly paid store colleagues nationwide.
  • In Greater London, entry rates rise to £14.35 an hour, increasing to £14.66 with length of service.
  • Outside London, experienced staff can earn up to £13.95 an hour under Aldi’s tenure bands.
  • The extra two pence over July’s plan keeps Aldi fractionally ahead of Lidl’s £13.00 entry rate announced for September.
  • This is Aldi’s second pay rise of 2025 and it continues to offer paid breaks, which it values at about £1,425 a year.
