Aldi Locks In Permanent Cuts on Over 15 Dairy Items as Price War Spreads Across Germany

Retailers cite cheaper raw milk as they pass through savings to shoppers.

Overview

  • Aldi announced permanent reductions of up to about 25% on more than 15 dairy products effective Nov. 14, covering items such as Skyr, Quark, crème fraîche and cream with typical savings of 10–30 cents per pack.
  • Examples from Aldi include Milsani Skyr 500 g at €1.19 (down 30 cents), Skyr Fruit 500 g at €1.39 (down 30 cents), low‑fat quark 500 g at €0.99 (down 30 cents) and whipping cream 200 g at €0.89 (down 10 cents).
  • Lidl has led repeated butter cuts since late September, pricing Milbona Deutsche Markenbutter at €1.49 per 250 g and reducing a Milbona mixed spread to €1.39, moves that pressured rivals to follow.
  • Sector-wide reductions now extend beyond butter as Edeka, Rewe, Penny, Netto Marken-Discount, Norma and Kaufland match lower shelf prices on core dairy lines.
  • Producer groups warn of a crisis as exchange data show butter quotations down roughly 35% since October 2024, cheese about 28% lower and milk deliveries up around 6.5% year on year, squeezing farm incomes and liquidity.
