Aldi Is Cheapest Supermarket for September, Asda Tops Big Shops

Which? urges shoppers to switch to cheaper retailers in response to 5.1% food inflation.

Overview

  • Aldi led Which?’s 71-item basket in September at £122.77, edging Lidl by £1.18 after Lidl’s £123.95 total.
  • For a larger 186-item shop, Asda was cheapest at £465.66, beating Tesco with a Clubcard at £472.45, with Aldi and Lidl excluded due to limited ranges.
  • Waitrose was the priciest on both measures, averaging £167.19 for the smaller basket and £531.39 for the larger list.
  • Which? includes special-offer and loyalty prices in its comparisons but excludes multibuys, using a mix of branded and own-label staples.
  • Retail editor Reena Sewraz said switching to cheaper supermarkets can cut bills by up to 36%, with Aldi retaining the monthly top spot after Lidl briefly led in July.
