Alberta Votes in Municipal Elections as Hand Counts Delay Results

A new provincial law forces hand counts, reshaping timelines and costs.

Overview

  • Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and anyone in line at closing can still vote.
  • Calgary will count advance mayoral ballots first with a late-night outcome possible, council results expected Tuesday, and all races due to the province by noon on Friday, Oct. 24.
  • Elections Calgary added $3.3 million in staffing to meet manual counting needs, taking the total election budget to just under $12 million.
  • More than 896,000 Calgarians are eligible to vote, and about 96,549 cast ballots in advance polls from Oct. 6–11, an unofficial turnout of roughly 10.7 percent.
  • Bill 20 also allows municipal party labels, which a political scientist says have created confusion as Calgary’s five-way mayoral contest features Jyoti Gondek, Jeromy Farkas, Sonya Sharp, Jeff Davison and Brian Thiessen.
