Alberta Unveils 20-Member Action Team to Tackle Classroom Aggression
Feedback from across the education sector will inform recommendations due this fall.
Overview
- Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides announced the group’s launch after a December 2023 survey and recent reports highlighted rising physical aggression and mental health pressures in classrooms.
- The action team will include representatives from major school boards, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, education assistants, school resource officers and advocacy organizations such as Inclusion Alberta.
- Members will begin meeting this summer to develop policy options over a six-month period and deliver both short- and long-term recommendations by fall 2025.
- Some of the team’s proposed measures could be implemented in the 2025–26 school year to strengthen mental health supports, counselling services and classroom assistance.
- This initiative forms part of a broader provincial strategy to reduce learning disruptions and ensure safe, inclusive environments for students and staff.
