Alberta Reaches $142.8 Million Settlement With Atrum Coal Over Policy Reversals

Paid $136.8 million upfront, the province will hold back $6 million until lease reclamation is completed.

Overview

  • Atrum Coal agreed to drop its $142.8 million lawsuit and surrender its foothills coal leases under the settlement.
  • Atrum will distribute net proceeds to shareholders after covering taxes, legal fees, director compensation and reclamation funds.
  • Evolve Power has also settled its claim with Alberta but has not publicly disclosed the terms.
  • Three other expropriation lawsuits by Cabin Ridge, Black Eagle and Northback remain active as part of a joint $16 billion damages pursuit.
