Overview
- The provincial government, which announced the funding Monday, will plan a major expansion of Strathcona Community Hospital in Sherwood Park as part of its Budget 2026 capital plan.
- The concept calls for up to 120 inpatient beds with shelled space for 32 more, new surgical suites for about 4,100 procedures a year, two endoscopy rooms, ambulatory clinics, expanded imaging, pharmacy and lab services, a hemodialysis unit, and integrated mental‑health supports.
- Strathcona Community Hospital does not currently have inpatient units, so more than 100,000 nearby residents travel into Edmonton for overnight care and many surgeries.
- The investment covers planning only, with a business plan headed to Treasury Board for a future budget decision and no construction funding or timeline approved yet.
- Opposition MLA Lizette Tejada has a motion pressing for regular reporting of emergency department deaths and more capacity funding, and Minister Matt Jones said he is reviewing it while pointing to projects that add beds and urgent care sites across Alberta.
