Alberta Orders Review of School Book Ban After Atwood’s Satire, Public Backlash

The education minister says he will rewrite the July directive to protect classic literature.

Overview

  • Demetrios Nicolaides ordered a review and said he will revise the policy so classic works remain available while restricting graphic pornographic images.
  • Margaret Atwood published a satirical short story on X mocking the ban after her novel The Handmaid’s Tale appeared on an Edmonton Public Schools removal list.
  • Edmonton Public compiled a list of more than 200 titles flagged for removal, including works by George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Maya Angelou and others.
  • The July order defined sexually explicit content to include masturbation, penetration and ejaculation, a scope critics say swept in educational material and acclaimed literature.
  • Premier Danielle Smith called Edmonton’s list “vicious compliance” and pointed to graphic novels such as Gender Queer as the impetus for the rules, as conservative groups claimed credit for pressing the government to act.
