Alberta Opens Public Survey on Raising Divided-Highway Speed Limits to 120 km/h

The province pledges a data-driven approach with strong monitoring before any wider rollout.

Overview

  • The online questionnaire runs Nov. 7 to Dec. 12 and seeks views on increasing the current 110 km/h limit to 120 km/h on divided highways.
  • After the survey closes, feedback will guide a monitored mini-trial of 120 km/h, which Premier Danielle Smith says will be watched closely to prevent additional accidents or collisions.
  • The survey also asks for opinions on restricting commercial trucks from using the far-left lane on highways with three or more lanes.
  • Candidate routes identified for potential testing include Highways 1, 2 (excluding Deerfoot Trail), 3, 4, 16, 63 and 43.
  • Officials emphasize that posted limits reflect ideal conditions and drivers should slow down when roads are wet, icy or visibility is reduced.
