Alberta Opens Public Survey on Raising Divided-Highway Speed Limit to 120 km/h

The government says the change would align posted limits with highway design speeds.

Overview

  • An online survey running Nov. 7 to Dec. 12 asks Albertans whether limits on divided highways should rise from 110 km/h to 120 km/h.
  • Officials say they will review responses and then run a closely monitored pilot of 120 km/h on selected corridors, and no permanent change has been made.
  • The questionnaire also seeks input on which routes to prioritize and whether to restrict commercial trucks from the far-left lane on highways with three or more lanes.
  • Reporting identifies potential corridors under review including Highway 1, Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary (excluding Deerfoot Trail), and portions of Highways 3, 4, 16, 43 and 63.
  • Coverage notes British Columbia raised some limits to 120 km/h in 2014 but rolled back many to 110 km/h in 2018 after collision data worsened, a precedent Alberta says it will heed through close monitoring.
