Naheed Nenshi, leader of the Alberta NDP and former Calgary mayor, has announced his intention to seek the party's nomination in the Edmonton-Strathcona riding.
The Edmonton-Strathcona seat was vacated on December 30, 2024, when former NDP leader and premier Rachel Notley stepped down after nearly 17 years in the legislature.
Edmonton-Strathcona has been a consistent NDP stronghold for nearly four decades, with the exception of one term in the 1990s.
Nenshi, who has faced criticism from Premier Danielle Smith's government for not holding a legislature seat since becoming NDP leader, emphasized his commitment to representing both Calgary and Edmonton.
Premier Danielle Smith has until June 30, 2025, to call a byelection, with Nenshi expressing readiness to challenge Smith directly in the legislature.
