Alberta Names Calgary’s West Bow Bridges for Cpl. Nathan Hornburg on 18th Anniversary of His Death

The province is using bridge dedications to create a lasting public tribute to the Calgary reservist’s sacrifice.

Overview

  • Two new bridges over the Bow River on Stoney Trail in northwest Calgary will carry Corporal Nathan Hornburg’s name.
  • Commemorative signs will be installed in both directions near the crossings to honour him and recognize Canadian soldiers’ service.
  • Cpl. Hornburg, a reservist with The King’s Own Calgary Regiment, was killed on Sept. 24, 2007 while recovering a disabled tank in Kandahar’s Panjwai District.
  • Hornburg’s family attended the dedication, and his sister Rachel Herbert said he would have appreciated having a bridge bear his name.
  • Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen linked the move to Alberta’s recent practice of naming infrastructure for fallen public servants, including 2024 bridge dedications in Edmonton.
