Alberta Hires WSP to Study Belly River Dam and Headworks Upgrades

Officials say the exploratory work could guide future decisions on drought resilience.

Overview

  • Alberta contracted WSP Canada to run a multi-year feasibility study on a potential dam and reservoir on the Belly River.
  • The review will also assess improvements to the Waterton–St. Mary headworks, including options to enhance canal capacity and water flows between the two reservoirs.
  • The proposed reservoir site lies about five kilometres northwest of Mountain View in Cardston County.
  • The government has not committed to construction or approvals, and the studies are expected to take several years to complete.
  • Irrigation districts that draw from the Belly River, including Magrath, Mountain View, Raymond, St. Mary River, Taber and United, welcomed the study, citing benefits for regional agriculture.
