Alberta Premier Danielle Smith speaks to reporters on April 29. On her weekend radio program on Saturday, she said the province will fight the temporary court injunction against Bill 26.

Overview

  • On June 27, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta granted a temporary injunction that paused Bill 26 before it could be enforced.
  • The legislation, passed in late 2024, would have prohibited puberty blockers and hormone therapies for anyone under 16.
  • Justice Kuntz found that denying gender-affirming care risks emotional harm and unwanted physical changes in youth whose identity differs from their birth-assigned sex.
  • Egale Canada and the Skipping Stone Foundation, joined by five transgender adolescents, argued the ban violates equality and security-of-the-person rights under the Charter.
  • The Canadian Medical Association and three Alberta doctors have an active lawsuit claiming the law infringes their freedom-of-conscience protections.
