Alberta confirms over 600 measles cases, issues standing advisory for south health zone

Low immunization rates among youth have led Alberta Health Services to warn of a significant exposure risk across southern Alberta.

The latest numbers from Alberta Health show there were 46 new, confirmed cases of measles over the weekend with all but two of them in the province's south health zone.

Overview

  • Alberta recorded 46 new measles cases over the weekend, bringing the total to 606 confirmed cases with 452 in the south health zone.
  • Children under 18 account for the majority of infections, including 466 cases in that age group and 188 among those under five.
  • Alberta Health Services replaced site-specific exposure alerts with a standing advisory for the entire south health zone on Friday.
  • Officials report 44 hospitalizations as of early May and warn that under-reporting may mask the outbreak’s true scale.
  • Ontario leads Canada’s measles resurgence with about 1,800 cases, prompting calls for residents born since 1970 to ensure they have two documented MMR doses.
